We landed in Auckland around 5.30a.m. today (Thursday). We dropped our bags at the hotel but it was of course too early to check in so we went for a wander round a very quiet Auckland and watched the sun come up over the harbour, which was filled with some very nice super yachts and “Gin Palaces” as Dad would call them (very expensive motor boats!).
Whilst feeling relatively awake this morning and having a wonder through Auckland in the daylight, we set off for the Maritime Museum which was very interesting. We saw traditional canoes with outriggers that islanders used for travel and fishing, small sailing boats and an original New Zealand Americas Cup yacht which was quite something. There was even a model of a Dredger which had been built by Ferguson Ship builders in Paisley, Scotland in 1909 and sailed over to New Zealand to start work.
On the way back I saw a motorbike I’d never seen before so of course had to take some quick pics of that (a Cheverolet V8 Chopper!).
Jet lag caught up with us and a little siesta mid afternoon turned into the mother of all sleeps and we didn’t wake up until 12 hours later - 4.30am on Friday! Today certainly went quickly.
Note to self: no siestas or mid afternoon naps tomorrow as it’s our last day in Auckland and there’s much to see.
