Day 22 Jet Skiing the Bay

We had the best day ever today!  Andy booked us on to do an hour long jet ski tour of some the Bay of Islands.  We hopped on the foot ferry and were met at the other side by Marni who took us to the jet skis.  Our jet ski guide was Marni’s husband - Rich, who was a real character and full of fun.  There were only Andy and I on the tour so we set off, after some instruction from Rich, on our own jet Skis.  They were so much fun!  After a quick whizz around, Rich said we’d got the hang of them and we set off on our adventure, following behind Rich.  Our 1 hour turned into nearly 3 hours (there weren’t any other bookings today) and it was just incredible!  We must have travelled over 50 miles, zipping in and out of caves, round little sandy bays and past uninhabited islands.  The water was turquoise and crystal clear.  Rich said that sometimes you can see Hammerhead sharks - we didn’t see any today but I did see some sting rays.

We found out that there are 144 islands in The Bay of Islands - most of them uninhabited.  We also saw the bay where Captain Cook is suppose to have first landed, had some altercations with the Mouri’s and set off elsewhere!

After our jet ski adventure we visited the Tipsy Oyster bar for a bite to eat and then headed back over to Russell on the little foot ferry.

We’ve decided that tonight will be fish and chips on the balcony, followed by some ice cream - yum.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring!
