It’s been a very lazy day today. As it’s a Sunday, many sightseeing things were not open so we had a wonder round a couple of big churches and found the large local market to have a mooch around. Everything you can think of was sold at the market, from textiles to clothes, fruit and veg to fish and meat. Andy enjoyed walking round the meat part of the market far more than I did - the many tripe and offal stalls were just about the end of me and my nose was rapidly covered. The fruit and veg stalls, however, were fantastic! There were so many fruits I’d never seen before and the Peruvians enthusiasm for their beloved potatoes is infectious.
We ventured back to the town square and sat on the Cathedral steps, watching the world go buy in the main square in front of us. This seems to be the thing most people do in Arequipa - the square was full of people out for a stroll, some older people brought their crosswords and sat upon benches enjoying the sun whilst solving their cryptic puzzles. The younger generations seem to partake in a huge foam fight with great regularity! Today was the mother of all foam fights, and anyone brave enough to enter the centre of the town square was guaranteed to come out looking like a giant foam covered snow man!
It seems to be the pattern that it’s sunny til about 3pm, then the rain starts, so we headed back to the hotel.
It’s packing day again tomorrow - our last day in Peru.
