The sun is out and today we visited something quite remarkable, The Monestario de Saint Catalina, which was a convent created in 1580 and was home to up to 46 nuns at a time until 1970, when it then opened to the public. It took a whole morning to wonder round the sight which was a village in itself. There were lots of cobbled streets, off which were little houses -each nun would have had her own little house with bedroom and kitchen. The walls of the village were painted terracotta or bright blue and the living quarters were very sparse. Andy was particularly taken with the various bread ovens throughout the sight, and the little clay oven that each house had. Many pictures were taken as it’s given him inspiration for building a pizza oven in the garden!
There are still nuns living in part of the Convent today however, that part is sectioned of. We have seen several nuns on out travels in Peru, however they always seem to be at an airport in a wheelchair, off on their travels!
The heavens opened later in the afternoon so we packed, had the most delicious meal at a restaurant called Tanta (would highly recommend if you’re ever in Peru) and got ready for leaving at 5.30am tomorrow for New Zealand.
