The Douglas DC-3's history begins with its construction in 1943. After serving as a passenger plane, then a top dressing plane (crop duster, for the American audience), it was decommissioned in 1984 and became a promotional feature in the parking lot of Taupō's Aeroplane Car Company, a car dealership. When the dealership's location was purchased in 1990 to be turned into a franchise of McDonald's (known locally as "Maccas"), the airplane was included.
Nowadays, the plane's interior features additional seating for diners, as well as the original cockpit, protected yet visible behind a clear screen.
This afternoon the sun reappeared so we decided to make use of some of the nearby facilities ….. pétanque area and tennis courts! Who knew that pétanque appears to be “my thing!”. After googling pétanque rules Andy and I did battle on the Pétanque court (I’ve no idea what the proper name for it is!). Much to my surprise, & Andy’s, I was quite good and managed to win 13-6! I think I must have been a world champion in a previous life 🤣!
Next up was tennis 🎾, which for us novices, involved as much running round picking up balls as it did hitting them 😜.🎾👟
A much needed rest was required after such strenuous activity so we headed home for a dip in the pool and a fruit smoothie.
On the menu this evening was toad in the hole and I can report that it was delicious! Andy did have to pray to the toad in the hole gods that it was rising in the oven as it should, as the oven door had no glass window to enable you to see how it was coming along. He needn’t have worried - all was well.
